The Paniyas are an indigenous tribe primarily found in the southern parts of India, particularly in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Historically, the Paniyas were agricultural laborers and bonded workers, and they remain closely tied to the land. The name "Paniya" itself is derived from the word "Pani," which means "work" in their language, signifying their identity as laborers.
Key Features of Paniyas:
1. Location: Primarily in the Wayanad district of Kerala, with smaller populations in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
2. Language: They speak the Paniya language, which is a Dravidian language, though many Paniyas are also fluent in Malayalam and Tamil.
3. Lifestyle: Traditionally, the Paniyas were dependent on agriculture and forest-based activities. They were often bonded laborers working on plantations and agricultural fields under landlords.
4. Culture and Traditions:
They have unique customs and beliefs, especially regarding nature and their ancestral spirits.
Festivals and rituals are an important part of their social life, and they often involve dancing and music.
They practice animism, though many have converted to Hinduism or Christianity over time.
5. Housing: Paniyas traditionally live in small huts made of bamboo and thatch, though modernization has led to changes in their living conditions.
6. Challenges: The Paniyas have historically been marginalized, facing social and economic challenges. Many continue to live in poverty, with low literacy rates and limited access to health care and other resources. Efforts are ongoing by the government and NGOs to improve their living standards through education, land rights, and health programs.
7.cultures: Paniya primarily inhabit Kerala, and the Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Malappuram districts.

Paniyas typically live in villages (padis) consisting of a few huts (pire or chala) with courtyards. Each hut settlement contains 5 to 15 families.
For attire, Paniya males wear a lengthy cloth wrapped around the waist, which is known as a mundu. A smaller mundu is also slung over the shoulders to cover the body. Paniya females or panichi don a long cloth, with a smaller one above the breast area and around the armpits. In addition, they wear a red or black aratti scarf around the waist. Land grabbers and poachers exploit them by encouraging drinking habit, sexual infidelity and other vices. PEEP Wayanad also organises various events to spread awareness on social menaces like alcoholism and chewing tobacco. Street plays in the local language has been staged at several forest settlements.
The Paniyas bury their dead in formal funeral rites. Typically, the place of burial is close to the padi. The interment is accompanied by a seven-day mourning period by family members.
Their rich culture and close ties to the land make the Paniyas a significant part of the socio-cultural fabric of southern India.
