Last week we looked at the Stoner 86/ARES LMG-1 in depth while at the Institute of Military Technology in Florida. This week we are comparing the older design to the much more modern Knight's Armament 5.56x45mm NATO Light Assualt Machine Gun (LAMG) that the company brought to SHOT Show last year and this year. In addition to the 5.56x45mm version, there is also a 7.62x51mm version as well. Hopefully we'll be able to get an in-depth look at it in the future, but for the time being we were only able to see the smaller caliber version.
So Knight's took the basic operating system of Stoner's with the bolt never actually hitting the rear of the receiver, thus reducing the recoil impulse. However the exterior of the light machine gun has been completely updated with modern M-Lok and M1913 Picatinny rail sections, in addition to changing a number of the operating controls. Gone is the Garand style safety, replaced by a cross bolt safety very similar to the M249 SAW that the design is hoping to replace throughout the world. The charging handle has been changed from the right side of the design to the left side, possibly to support its "Assualt" role in malfunctions and charging the weapon while retaining full control of the pistol grip. It also has been adapted for a 100 round M249 soft pack mounted underneath the weapon system. Something that we didn't mention in the video is that both the 5.56x45mm and 7.62x51mm designs
