In late December 1944, an unusual military development gave additional momentum to American war crimes policy. During the Battle of the Bulge, a German SS unit shot over seventy American prisoners at Malmedy, Belgium. American opinion was immediately inflamed and demands grew for punitive action against the Nazi leadership. A Trial was held in the Dachau Concentration Camp during May-July 1946 for those defendants accused of crimes against humanity. 43 were sentenced to hang.
