Project Title: Rumah Kopi Jl. Pattimura
Completion Year: 2019
Gross Built Area: 113 m²
Location: Kota Makassar, Sulawesi Selatan
This construction is an adaptive reuse project at an unused hotel lobby. The existing building is enclosed in a boxy shape with a typical 90s shophouse steel door where the assigned project occurred. The design brief was to create a coffee shop within a limited space and rental duration (three years).
This building is near a heritage city park with lush greenery. Thus, facing the park and creating a down-to-earth ambience amid a dense urban centre offers an opportunity to create a different atmosphere for the coffee shop.
Therefore, to reduce the existing building's enclosed character and limited rental space, we developed the concept of a ‘Balcony’ (veranda). In most Tropical Indonesian houses, Beranda is the transition between public and private spaces where visitors are welcome before entering the house.
This Balcony extends the existing rented space. Its down-to-earth shape avoids trying to scream yet welcomes people into the coffee shop.
The Balcony's construction system uses wooden construction using plywood.
Why plywood over solid wood? Plywood is widely available in building stores, while solid wood requires special treatment and is less recommended. Plywood, as an industrial product, offers varying strength and quality. It is engineered to achieve sufficient thickness and dimensions for structural use.
Construction was done using the traditional method without nails and bolts. This approach was chosen as proof that this method is still very relevant in this modern age and has proven its strength over time.
This building was completed in 2019 and emptied during COVID-19. We were worried that the wood structure would not last long, but with the new tenant, the wood construction is still good, and the joinery is strong.
