As part of EDJNet’s investigation on the abuse of preventive detention in Europe ([ Ссылка ]), EUrologus made an insightful interview with a innocent convict who was wrongly sentenced.
Hungarian Sándor Schönstein, 44, was sentenced to 12 years in prison because, according to the court, he killed his mother in 2007. The young man spent almost two years behind bars. The proceedings against him continued even when the real culprit admitted that he had committed the murder. At the end of a procedure that lasted for many years, Schönstein received HUF 10 million (€25,000) in compensation in 2016, which approximately covered his legal fees. Meanwhile, he dropped out of University and found it difficult to find employment. Today, he lives a balanced life, but he has become more withdrawn emotionally from society and often experiences distress in social situations.
