I often say, "Age isn't about years lived. It's about deficiencies acquired." Your breasts don't know how old they are. If you supply them with physiologic levels of hormones that approximate, as best we can, the hormone levels of a reproductive aged woman, they will behave like the breasts of a reproductive aged woman. That means that they will continue to maintain the ducts, lobules, and other structures of reproductive aged breasts. And on a mammogram, they will continue to appear dense.
This is not a risk for cancer. Breast cancer is primarily a disease of menopausal women. Hormones are protective.
The only women who really need to worry about breast density are:
#1) Any woman of any age who has a mammogram that shows extreme density.
#2) Post-menopausal women who are not on hormones who still have dense breasts
In those cases, breast density is a sign of inflammation, and inflammation is a significant risk factor for developing breast cancer.
