The origin of sumo is the story of gods comparing their strengths in the Japanese myths: 古事記 Kojiki and 日本書紀 Nihon Shoki. In ancient times, sumo was used by the aristocracy to predict good or bad fortune, and to pray for a good harvest and peace.
Coming into the eras in which the samurai ruled Japan (Kamakura and Muromachi periods), the warriors gradually began to wrestle sumo too.
Then, in the era when Oda Nobunaga began to gain power during the Sengoku war era, the popularity of sumo wrestling exploded among the samurai. However, the sumo which samurai practiced did not have any ritualistic purposes.
Oda Nobunaga was a great lover of sumo and would hold sumo tournaments at his castle where more than 1,500 people competed. He took men who were especially good at sumo as his subordinates, so samurai began to practice sumo in order to gain a higher status.
So in the samurai era, sumo became less of an entertainment/ritual for the aristocrats, but more of a way to physically train for the samurai.
The connection between sumo and samurai can still be seen in the archery ceremony, the tachi brought together when the top wrestlers enter the ring, and their chonmage hairstyle.
