The wonderful Phoenix Dance are back following their sell-out, standing ovation-inducing performance last year. This year they’re mounting a bold, culturally distinctive modern reworking of the iconic ballet, The Rite of Spring.
Haitian choreographer Jeanguy Saintus re-envisions the near riot-causing original by Vaslav Nijinsky, introducing the sacred arts of Haiti, alongside contemporary global issues. In a programme change, Phoenix will also perform Left Unseen. This piece explores inclusion and isolation and our instinctive reliance on the five senses. Using precise choreography, moments of unison, interaction, sporadic bursts of movement and sudden stillness, Lebrun poses the question, how sensitive and aware can we become when we lose one of our senses…?
