We’ve decided to start off our first summer #RegulaChronicles issue with exploring 500 Norwegian kroner, 2018, a runner-up for the IBNS Banknote of the Year Award 2018. The note which belongs to the 8th banknote series was released into circulation on 18 October 2018.

The main theme of 500 Norwegian kroner is closely connected with the Norwegian maritime history which is magnificently woven into the note’s design and security features. The front side pictures the classic rescue vessel RS 14 “Stavanger” which was designed by Norway's most famous shipbuilder, Colin Archer. “Stavanger” saved 2,976 boats and 20 ships and now is recognized as a part of the national cultural heritage of Norway. The rescue vessel is printed in intaglio which makes the image tactile. The reverse side of the banknote appears as an abstract depiction of the sea with the pixeled oil platform on the horizon and the Norwegian pipeline network.

The banknote is made of cotton paper, enabling the inclusion of the motion thread in the form of an anchor chain which appears to move when the note is tilted. Paying special attention to details, the 500-krone banknote is strewn with microprinting which repeats the shape of waves in the area near the horizon and may be noticed in front the rescue ship, as well as underneath the anchor chain.

The Atlantic puffin, a seabird which breeds on the north and west coasts of Norway, is depicted on the note several times. All Norwegian banknotes of the 8th series portray it on the front side in the upper-right corner. The head of a puffin is also featured in the watermark visible in transmitted light. Two images of the bird may also be seen on the front side of the banknote, in the left part, when exposed to UV light.
