It was announced back in 2018 that a coin would be released to mark the day Britain leave the European Union.   The Brexit 50p was initially due on March 29 but as we know, that didn't quite go to plan after an extension was granted until January 31.  So those set of coins, stamped with the words "Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations", were melted down.  But with the UK's departure from the EU officially taking place on Friday, a new coin has been devised, stamped with the right date and will enter banks, Post Offices and shops nationwide from January 31.  Around three million coins will enter circulation to begin with, with a further seven million later this year.  According to the Government website, more than 13,000 people have already registered their interest in the coin which is already available to buy from the Royal Mint.  Also on the Royal Mint is an Uncirculated edition which is part of a two-coin historic set as well as a number of gold Sovereigns which will be struck on the day itself.  After seeing the coin for the first time, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sajid Javid said: "Leaving the European Union is a turning point in our history and this coin marks the beginning of this new chapter."
