ENDOSCOPIC ENDONASAL SKULL BASE SURGERY IN PEDIATRICS "CRANIOPHARYNGIOMA"
In recent years, few reports have demonstrated the feasibility of the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) for craniopharyngiomas in pediatric patients. For these tumors, recent studies have suggested less aggressive surgery, favoring the preservation of the patient's quality of life.
(AEE) may be an effective approach for midline craniopharyngiomas in children older than 3 years. It provides satisfactory exposure of the suprasellar region and adequate evaluation of the brain-tumor interface. Its main limitations are the age-related anatomical characteristics of the nasal/paranasal sinuses and the risk of cerebrospinal fluid leak.
In addition, the (AEE) is used in other pathologies of the skull base in the pediatric population which has been facilitated by improvements in intraoperative image visualization and guidance, as well as by the miniaturization of instruments. These technological advances have allowed us to implement minimally invasive (ESA) in the treatment of various pathologies in the smallest confines of pediatric patients by improving navigation through their non-aerated sinuses.
Conclusions: This minimally invasive surgical technique has been shown to be safe and feasible for the treatment of a variety of pediatric skull base pathologies. When appropriately indicated, allowing optimal results in the pediatric population.
