In this episode of Paint like a Pro, Resene paint expert Murdo Shaw will show you how to cut in.
Cutting in is one of the most crucial parts of the painting process. So what is it? Cutting is painting around the edges of your project, for example, the top of ceilings, above a skirting board or around door frames.
Murdo will tell you about the best tools to use for cutting in, step-by-step techniques to get perfect finishes on your surfaces – and a few tricks of the trade to have you painting like a pro.
You will need the following:
- Drop cloth
- Paint
- Paint pot
- Paint brushes
Step 1. Make sure you have the right brush. Get the best brush you can afford. There are a few different options but always buy premium brushes if you can because they make the job easier and give a much better finish. An oval brush holds plenty of paint and you can get a really smooth finish with very few brush marks. Another option is an angled brush – they are a bit thinner, have a longer handle and can be more comfortable to use if you have smaller hands.
Step 2. Use a paint pot. You only need a small amount of paint, around half a litre. Start with a damp brush and dip it into the pot and work it into the bristles. Tap on the side of the paint pot to remove excess paint.
Step 3. Start cutting in from the top of your wall and work your way down the edges of doors, around door frames, light switches, and finish off with anything lowdown like skirting boards.
Step 4. You want to aim for long, smooth, even strokes. Make sure you feather the edges. This means brushing the paint out so you get an even texture across the wall, avoiding nasty brush marks.
Practice and technique are key. Good luck!
In this video, Murdo Shaw is using Resene SpaceCote Flat washable wall and ceiling exterior/interior waterborne enamel paint in the colour Resene Savour.
