In April 1985, Ichikawa Ebizō X recieved the most famous name in kabuki, Ichikawa Danjūrō XII, previously held by his father from 1962 to 1965. The shūmei ("name-taking ceremony") took place from April to June at the Kabuki-za theatre in Tokyo.
A total of 18 plays were performed, including 6 from the Kabuki Jūhachiban collection of the Ichikawa family: Kenuki, Kanjinchō, Sukeroku, Shibaraku, Uirō Uri and Narukami.
In addition to Danjūrō himself and his son, who recieved the new name Ichikawa Shinnosuke VII during the May program, other major actors appearing included Nakamura Utaemon VI, Onoe Shōroku II, Kataoka Nizaemon XIII, Nakamura Kanzaburo XVII, Onoe Baikō VII, Jitsukawa Enjaku III, Onoe Kikugorō VII, Kataoka Nizaemon XV, Matsumoto Kōshirō IX and Bando Tamasaburō V among many others.
