(3 Jul 2017) New Jersey residents and tourists hoping to visit some of the state parks on Monday were turned away in frustration, told they were closed due to a government shutdown.
Governor Chris Christie ordered the shutdown of nonessential state government, including state beaches and parks, on Friday, amid a budget impasse.
Now, three days in, there appears to be little sign that a resolution is in sight.
The budget impasse centers around a dispute between Christie and the Democratic state Assembly leader, Vincent Prieto, over a plan to overhaul New Jersey's largest health insurer, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Christie has agreed to more than $300 million worth of Democratic spending priorities in exchange for the overhaul. Prieto is opposed to changes to Horizon.
Residents feeling the affects of the shutdown were particularly frustrated after photos showed the governor lounging with his family Sunday at a beach in a state park he had ordered closed.
