Mary's Yes was a project inspired by The Office of Readings for the fourth Sunday of Advent. In this song, Mary is holding her newborn son, and is pondering how Him and His birth came to be.
"The price of our salvation is offered to you [Mary]. We shall be set free at once if you consent. In the eternal Word of God we all came to be, and behold, we die. In your brief response we are to be remade in order to be recalled to life.... on your word depends comfort for the wretched, ransom for the captive, freedom for the condemned, indeed, salvation for all the sons of Adam, the whole of your race."
From a homily entitled "In Praise of the Virgin Mother" by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux.
(Verse 1)
Cold winter's night
Sleeping in a barn
Star so bright
Baby in your arms
(Verse 2)
Think back to the place
Where things begun
"Hail full of grace
Highly favored one"
He asked you a question
Do you remember what you said?
(Chorus)
"I am the handmaid of the Lord
Let it be done to me his word"
Our salvation in your hands
Privilege I cannot understand
The power within
A young girl's "yes"
Mary's "Yes"
(Verse 3)
God's plan for us
Needed your consent
Heaven was shut
So God's Son was sent
He awaited your word
Do you remember what you said?
(Bridge)
Your yes became a bump
Your bump became a child
Child became a boy
Boy became a man
A man born to rule
A man born to suffer
A man born to die
Upon the cross
But rise again
Rise again
