Once the rope is released, a large stone weighing several tens of kilograms is thrown upwards, covering a distance of tens of meters to hit its target. This is the trebuchet, a type of giant sling that became one of the most popular war machines in the 12th century. To launch the projectile, the trebuchet utilizes the conversion of gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy. A very heavy counterweight is placed at one end of the lever. When this weight falls due to gravity, the other end of the lever rises, releasing the projectile from its sling.
