Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India, located in the state of Manipur. The lake is known for its unique floating islands called phumdis, which are made of vegetation, soil, and organic matter. The lake is also home to the endangered Manipur brow-antlered deer, also known as the Sangai. Visitors can take a boat ride to explore the lake and its surrounding areas, enjoy local delicacies like fish curry, and witness the traditional fishing techniques of the locals.
Additionally, the lake is also a significant source of hydropower generation and irrigation for the surrounding farmlands. The Loktak Lake and its phumdis have been declared a Ramsar site, a Wetland of International Importance, and efforts are underway to preserve and protect this unique ecosystem.
If you're a nature lover or looking to explore a lesser-known destination in Northeast India, Loktak Lake should definitely be on your list of places to visit
