On our Journey to Leh Ladakh, In this video we travelled from Srinagar to Kargil which offers a journey through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Indian Himalayas.
1. Route Overview
The journey from Srinagar to Kargil typically follows the Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH1D), which is also part of National Highway 1 (NH1). This route covers a distance of approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles) and usually takes around 6 to 8 hours by road, depending on road conditions and stops.
2. Best Time to Travel
The Srinagar-Kargil route is accessible mainly from late April to early November. During winter, the road may be closed due to heavy snowfall and landslides, particularly around the Zojila Pass.
3. Key Points on the Route
Srinagar: The journey begins in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Known for its beautiful lakes, gardens, and houseboats, it’s a city surrounded by the stunning Himalayan backdrop.
Sonamarg (79 km from Srinagar): A picturesque town, Sonamarg means “Meadow of Gold.” It’s famous for its lush meadows, and snow-covered peaks, and is a popular stopover for tourists.
Zojila Pass (60 km from Sonamarg): One of the highest and most treacherous mountain passes on the route, Zojila Pass sits at an altitude of 3,528 meters (11,575 feet). It’s often considered the most challenging part of the journey due to its narrow, winding roads and steep cliffs. The views, however, are nothing short of spectacular.
Drass (33 km from Zojila Pass): Known as the “Gateway to Ladakh,” Drass is the second coldest inhabited place in the world. The small town is historically significant due to the Kargil War in 1999. There’s a war memorial dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives during the conflict, which is worth visiting.
Kargil (58 km from Drass): Finally, you arrive in Kargil, a town situated along the banks of the Suru River. It serves as the administrative center of the Kargil district. Kargil is a key stopover for travelers heading to Leh or Zanskar.
