*my IBS journey*
I went to a gastroenterologist and had an endoscopy procedure about 7 or 8 years ago. I was then undoubtedly diagnosed with IBS— which i’ve pretty much had my whole life but didn’t have a name for it. I’ve come a long way in my IBS journey. Flare ups used to look like vomiting/dry heaving nightly, loss of appetite for several days, severe stomach pain to the point where I had to be hospitalized, constipation, feeling lethargic, weight loss and so many other unspeakable things. Nothing worked. None of the prescriptions doctors gave me worked. Today, a flare up looks like bloat, uncomfortableness in my gut, and a little gas. And this only happens when (like I said) I’ve eaten out too many times, I’ve eaten too many processed foods, extremely greasy foods or too much sugar or when I haven’t had enough water. When I cook at home mostly and stick to whole foods, this rarely happens.
I know everyone’s IBS/sensitive stomach journey is different. Five years ago, a few of my trigger foods included onions, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, beef, red meat, dairy, anything spicy — and a few others I’m having hard time remembering at this moment but these were the main trigger foods. The only thing I would be able to eat during a flare up was potatoes during this time. Today, I can eat all of these foods (obviously excluding meat and dairy) without any triggers due to eating mostly whole plant foods for the past 6 or 7 years. Today my triggers include caffeine, processed sugar, and anything highly processed. There are still some foods that I don’t digest that well but don’t necessarily trigger me, just give me a little bloat. For example, I cannot digest raw kale that well. My body also does not like when I combine fruit with things like nuts, beans, bread, grains, etc. My digestive system works really well when I have 2 mason jars full of water before I eat in the morning (I typically drink about a gallon or more of water daily). My gut also appreciates having a smoothie or juice in the morning which is why you mainly see me consume those things for breakfast.
I say all this to say I know everyone’s journey is different. The real magic is being able to listen to *your* body. Understanding what’s working for you and what’s not. While I can share my journey and what’s working for me, I encourage you to analyze your gut, your body, and how you feel after eating. However, i do hope my journey does help you in some way. If I was able to do this, so can you considering my food history. If you have any questions, please ask. Love youuuu.
