“Sleeping Beauty”
READ ON FOR ALLA PRIMA TIPS:
I’ve been doing a few ALLA PRIMA oil paintings these last few days.

Alla prima (Italian, meaning at first attempt), direct painting or au premier coup, is a painting technique in which layers of wet paint are applied to previously administered layers of wet paint.


Pushing myself to be conservative with brush strokes and enjoy some vibrant colour contrasts . It’s actually super fun even though challenging. ✨If you’re interested in collecting this study : it is 12” 12” , oil on linen panel, please message me ✨

* TIPS:
This is relatively new for me, so by no means do I consider myself an expert! But here are some tips you may find useful.
I find a quick dry medium (like @gamblin Galkyd ) helps and I enjoy working on primed linen panel. Both of these factors contribute to a faster drying time so the consecutive layers of paint don’t all just mush together and end up muddy.

* Before you begin : what is your focus ? For me - it was these amazing angles and blocks of light and shadow. Focusing on the masses and quality of line keeps it fresh.

* I also highly recommend using a limited palette and analogous colours as much as possible to transition from color to colour. Avoiding complimentary colours on TOP of each other of will also help in avoiding mud.

* Be sure to work “lean to fat “. (Thinner application to thicker). I don’t use any oil medium other than the aforementioned quick dry. Be sure to adhere to the recommended ratio so you don’t compromise the bind of your pigment.

* Work with your largest simplest shapes first and then finish off with highlights and fine details
* Stay relaxed !
