Many people believe that when a person dies, his or her consciousness does not disappear immediately, but rather wanders around as a spirit for a period of time and may be reincarnated as a human being again. There is no direct scientific evidence for this claim: there seems to be no way to instrumentally measure soul activity, and modern science recognizes that all human consciousness is hardwired into the brain and does not allow for consciousness to be removed from the physical body at all. More importantly, it seems to me that existing scientific theories are quite capable of explaining the world quite well, and that nothing seems to be explained by the fact that people have souls.

A New York cop, alias John, used to tell his daughter, alias Doreen, “No matter what happens, I'll take care of you.” In 1992, John was shot and killed in a robbery. He was shot six times, with the fatal shot entering his back, severing his left lung and heart, and rupturing a pulmonary artery.
