NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE PARISH #1: AYLESBY
Welcome to Aylesby, the first of 21 civil parishes in North East Lincolnshire. This is a good one to start with because it bridges the gap between West Lindsey and the unparished area of Grimsby
Aylesby is situated near the A18, approximately 4 miles west of Cleethorpes and north of the much larger village of Laceby. It’s one of the smallest in the district
The village's name at the time of Domesday was “Alesbi”. According to A.D Mills in A Dictionary of British Place Names, its name means “Farmstead or village of a man called Áli”
Aylesby might be small but it does have a few things that make it quite special. The biggest and most well known of these would be the row of 1920s almshouses at its Eastern end
They were built to honour just one man, and we’ll talk about him as we walk through the village. In 1950, Major Harry Spilman, once of Aylesby Manor, held the position of High Sheriff of Lincolnshire
And speaking of the Manor, Manor Farm was once noted for its sheep – a specific breed of our woolly friends no less, one which before making this episode, I’d never heard of
Its church also has an interesting link to a man we’ve met before in both North Lincolnshire and in Wakefield – John Harrison. Part of the church’s current interior was the handiwork of his brother
It might be small but it’s a great way to start a new area. Its Aylesby – lets go!
