It is known from history that the elephants of Dhaka's Pilkhana Palton ( Area for army elephant Platoon) in the 17th & 18th century used to take baths in the Shallow water channel of this area.– hence this water area named Hatirjheel. It is also learnt from history that the Bhawal Raja used to keep his tamed elephants at Pilkhana palton. The elephants were taken to the Hatirjheel shallow water area through the Elephant Road and Hatirpool for regular bathing.
Hatirjheel is located at the centre of the capital city, Dhaka. The area stretches from south Sonargaon Hotel to Rampura, Gulshan-Badda in the north. The place is surrounded by Tejgaon, Gulshan, Badda, Rampura, Banasree and Moghbazar, and New roads were constructed with the beautification of Hatirjheel to make it much easier for the people moving to these areas.
It has an area of about 300 acres while some 8.80 kilometre service road and some 8.80 kilometre expressway have been constructed under the project. The entire area of Hatirjheel is designed with about four main and four minor bridges, several overpasses, footbridges, footpaths, walkway, one children's park, and viewing decks. There are sitting arrangements for pedestrians by the riverside. During the dry season, the Hatirjheel lake can hold approximately 3 billion litres of water, and during the rainy season about 4.8 billion litres of water, making it the largest body of water reservoir in Dhaka city.
We could not take good video pictures from our running car as police did not allow any car to stop on the roadside. But we enjoyed the water taxi journey and took a lot of video’s surrounding . The food at the restaurant was good. The sky was cloudy and the pictures were not clear & bright. We are asking for an apology to the viewers for bad pictures.
