Lionel created a model of the Rail Diesel Car, RDC, also called Budd car or Buddliner in 1956. The original was build by the Budd Company of Philadelphia between 1949 and 1962. Edward Budd´s company become known for developing the first all-steel automobile body for the Dodge brothers which they used for their first car in 1914. There were several variants of the original RDC. The RDC-1 was a pure passenger car while the RDC-4 contained the railway post office and baggage area. In total Budd produced 398 cars which were sold not only in the US, but exported to Canada, Australia, Brazil and even Cuba.
