Many of you have asked me how it’s possible to shift from agency work to private practice. I mean, you do have a decent gig already: a steady salary, benefits, a ready stream of clients who need your help. It’s scary to leave something so secure for something that’s risky! But with a few tips, I believe you can make that transition fairly smoothly, and I show you how to do it in this video.
This video is geared for therapists of all kinds, including psychologists, MFTs, LPCCs, social workers, and others in the clinical counseling field.
Welcome to Private Practice Skills! I’m Dr. Marie Fang, psychologist in private practice. I post videos offering tools I learned the hard way about starting and growing private practice so that you don’t have to.

For most of us, moving from agency work to private practice is a gradual process. If I were at an agency wanting to make that transition, here are the steps I would take to do it:
1. Find Your Niche.
2. Develop a Marketing Strategy.
3. Implement Your Marketing Strategy.
4. Assess and Adjust.
5. Once you have some traction, then you can set up a means for potential clients to reach you.
6. Once you have a waitlist, you can explore sublet options. Or, you can opt to start as an exclusively teletherapy practice in the beginning if that works well for your potential clients.
7. Start Seeing Clients part-time.
8. From here, you can go one of two directions: continue increasing how much time you sublease an office and work on the side, or you can build a waitlist until it’s large enough that you feel comfortable ditching your agency job.
This is just one option for how you can make the transition from agency work to private practice, but I believe this option mitigates many of the fears many therapists have surrounding by allowing you to make the transition gradually and to develop a successful plan before ever leaving your stable job.
