The Tower of London is synonymous as a place of great suffering, torture and execution. During the Tudor era it was a highly brutal place where executions were carried out nearby, and also within the Tower's walls. One such beheading was that of Margaret Pole, a 67 year old Countess who was brutally murdered by a blundering axeman.
Margaret Pole throughout her life had an extremely interesting time being linked to the royalty. She would be a Plantagenet and possessed the royal blood of the Tudor dynasty's greatest rivals. Margaret Pole's uncles would be Edward IV and Richard III, and she would even be looked after by their rival Henry VII when he assumed the throne following the Battle of Bosworth. Henry would take care of her with his wife, and following his death and Henry VIII's assumption of the throne, she would find herself as part of the royal court.
She was tasked with many duties for example being the Governor of Mary I, and would be a lady in waiting for Catherine of Aragon. However religious differences and her son's loud opposition to the divorce of Catherine would signal problems for Margaret. She would fall from favour and would end up being accused of treason and was thrown into the Tower of London.
Margaret Pole would find herself in the Tower for over 2 years, and then she would be executed in one of the Tower's bloodiest episodes. A blundering executioner would take up to 11 swings of the axe to take the life of the Countess of Salisbury, and at one point its even speculated that she escaped the block running around the tower following one swing of the axe.
Join us today as we look at the remarkable story of, 'The Tower of London's Bloodies Execution, and the Death of Margaret Pole.'
** Apologies for an incorrect Henry VII, meant Henry VIII.
