"One quarter acre plot of intact longleaf pine ecosystem can contain up to 170 plant species. Think about that. That’s species diversity that is almost unmatched in any other ecosystem in the country. When you factor in all of the other plant, animal, and fungi species found in the Fire Forest, the diversity can seem almost overwhelming. And, yet, less than 20 remnants of original longleaf pine habitat remain. There’s a reason we chose to feature this ecosystem and we hope you're beginning to see why."
