The inductive effect involves the polarization of bonds between carbon and a more electronegative atom. The polarized bond places a partial positive charge on the carbon atom. This partial positive charge can stabilize nearby anions or destabilize nearby cations. The effect of this partial charge on other nearby charges is called the inductive effect.
