In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about genital psoriasis.
What is genital psoriasis?
Genital psoriasis is a type of the skin condition psoriasis that you get on or around your genitals. Sometimes that may be the only place you have it. But many people have itchy, red patches on other parts of their body at the same time.
Is genital psoriasis a sexually transmitted infection?
Genital psoriasis is NOT a sexually transmitted infection.
What are treatment options for genital psoriasis?
If you think you have, or have, genital psoriasis then you should see your doctor.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a treatment plan may include:
- Mild corticosteroid (with or without calcitriol ointment)
- Medium-strength or potent corticosteroid (used for a short time)
- Mild coal tar (use this only if a doctor recommends it)
- Calcipotriene cream
- Pimecrolimus cream or tacrolimus ointment
- Stronger medicine such as cyclosporine, methotrexate, or a biologic
If you follow the treatment plan and it fails to work, tell your dermatologist. No one treatment works for everyone. You may need different treatment to get relief.
