The UK wiring regulations are very specific when it comes to choosing RCD protection for electric vehicle charge points. Most electricians know about the need to avoid type AC RCDs. However, hidden within the regulations is the need for RCDs which isolate all live conductors. This is easy when selecting a regular RCD but causes some challenges when choosing to protect a circuit with an RCBO. An RCBO is a combination of RCD and MCB circuit protection. Most RCBOs only disconnect the line conductor. In this video, we explain the RCD requirements of BS7671 and the difference between single, double and single pole and switched neutral RCBOs.
