Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused cartels of killing the local sugar industry, putting many livelihoods at limbo, especially in the Western region. He applauded the government for reining on the illicit trade calling for hastened confiscation of contaminated sugar. Kipipiri MP, and former cabinet minister, Amos Kimunya, says that CS Fred Matiang'i's public announcement of the presence of mercury in sugar is ill-informed and a risk to the economy as it could dampen tourism.
