Dr. Ma angrily confronted the American spy Harris Chang: "You're Chinese. How could you work for these barbarians?"

Harris Chang laughed loudly: "I am a barbarian, sir. I'm an American-Born Chinese. 'ABC'. I grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona. China is a foreign country for me. Just so we're clear."

By the time the meeting was over, Dr. Ma would chant an ancient curse: screw "your ancestors to the eighteenth generation." But Dr. Ma would be leaving that room that day.

Harris Chang turned to Dr. Ma: "In two hours, you're going to meet me at this address downtown." He handed him a card. "Memorize it." "You will come alone." Do not be late.

Dr. Ma would have people watching him the whole way. His phones were already bugged.

As Harris Chang exited the hotel he called John Vandel on a safe phone.

"'Get the book', said Vandel. 'I need the book." Vandel wanted the book. Not even a copy of the book. The book itself. "And I don't care if they know it's missing. Correction: I want them to know its missing." The secret notebook Dr. Ma kept all his private secrets.

Vandel issued one last command: to lie to the Singapore CIA station chief Warren Winkle.

Warren Winkle would be lied to.

Harris Chang would lie to Warren Winkle, the Singapore CIA station chief.
