Thanks to its natural strategic position on a small peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea below the Taurus mountain range, Alanya has been a local stronghold for many Mediterranean empires, including the Ptolemaic, Seleucid, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires.
Among its beaches with rows of hotels with sea views, one remembers Cleopatra Beach, where the famous queen is said to have gone swimming.
