In this symposium, guests Svitlana Kravchenko, Natalia Petrenko, Krystyna Tumasova, Olena Stovba and Svitlana Moiseeva talk about the state of their libraries since the start of the Russia Ukraine war, the services that librarians are providing to their patrons, and how libraries have been swept up in the information war.
Svitlana Kravchenko is a librarian in Kyiv, at the Yaroslav Mudryi National Library of Ukraine. She’s been managing the library’s science and methodology department since 2022. Svitlana’s work is focused on public libraries, promotion of reading, and library data analysis.
Natalia Petrenko is the director of the V. H. Korolenko State Scientific Library of Kharkiv, which is one of the largest libraries in Europe. She is also head of the Kharkiv Regional Branch of the Ukrainian Library Association. Prior to these posts, Natalia worked for the Donetsk Regional Universal Scientific Library for 20 years.
Since 2016, Krystyna Tumasova has been Director of the Pokrovsk City Public Library, formerly known as the Pokrovsk City Centralized Library System, in Donetsk. Krystyna’s library career began in 2003 at the Krasnoarmiysk Central Library. From 2019 to 2020, she was also the Pokrovsk City Council’s Head of the Department of Culture, Tourism and Protection of Cultural Heritage for the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.
Olena Stovba is the director of the Nikopol City Centralized Library System in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. Olena began working for the library in 1989. In 2006, she launched a quarterly journal called “Library Orbit of Nikopol Region,” which covers prominent library events.
Since 2017, Svitlana Moiseeva has been the director of the Luhans’k Regional Universal Scientific Library. Svitlana is also vice president of the Ukrainian Library Association. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine destroyed the building where Luhans’k Regional Universal Scientific Library was located, so the library moved to Starobilsk, and then again to Cherkasy in central Ukraine.
This symposium was moderated by Ulia Gosart, who teaches information science and indigenous cultural practices of librarianship at the SJSU iSchool, and the iSchool's director, Anthony Chow. The Ukrainian-English translation for this symposium was done by Oleksii Deikun.
