The video is also a proof how scary the coronavirus situation in the country is turning out to be.
Pune is one of the districts in India most affected by the pandemic. In the last 24 hours, it has recorded 12,377 new cases and 87 deaths. There is an acute shortage of ICUs and ventilators in the city. For critical patients, getting an oxygen cylinder is a struggle. While the cases are rising exponentially, the health infrastructure is falling short.
But the struggle of the covid affected families is not limited to health infrastructure. Even after getting a bed in the hospital, the problem doesn't end. A key drug in treating the covid-19 patients Remdesivir is also falling short in supply. This has forced many to queue up outside the medical shops only to return empty handed many a times.
Family members and friends of the COVID-19 positive patients are queuing up outside medical shops from as early as 5 am, with the hope that they’ll be the first ones to get the injections for the treatment. People have been flocking the chemist shops or wholesale medical agencies with slim chances of getting these injections. Citing the uncontrolled crowd gathering, the administration has now banned the sale of these vials in the medical shops and will be supplied only to the hospitals.
But it is not only Pune, several other districts in India are facing a shortage of Remdesivir. These are the visuals from Ahmedabad and Surat.
In Ahmedabad people queued up outside Zydus hospital for 2 KMs to get Remdesivir. Similar situation is seen in Indore. As Covid-19 cases in India surged, so did the demand for Remdesivir and with it came indiscriminate usage, hoarding, and black marketers, causing artificial shortage to jack up prices.
Meanwhile, the Centre on Sunday banned the export of Remdesivir and active ingredients to tackle the shortage. But will it reduce common man's suffering.
