Thai soldiers killed at least 16 Muslim insurgents who attacked a marine base in a pre-dawn raid in Narathiwat Province, southern Thailand.
According to military officials, at least 60 armed insurgents opened fire at the marine base in Bacho at around 1:30 am on Wednesday.
Soldiers at the base had been tipped off by locals ahead of the attack, officials said. Other reports said defected insurgents had provided information about the planned attack.
