(7 Feb 2017) A group of Cuban doctors has landed in Miami, likely the last group to arrive under a decade-old US programme that helped physicians defect their international missions.
The Cuban Medical Professionals Parole was recently cancelled along with the more well-known "wet foot, dry foot" measure that allowed any Cuban who makes it to US soil to stay and become a legal resident.
The doctors landed on Monday at the Miami international airport, expressing relief that they received the authorisation from the US government even after President Barack Obama announced it was rescinding both policies.
The programme, started by President George W. Bush in 2006 allowed around 8,000 Cuban doctors, nurses and other medical professionals to seek parole in the US while on assignments abroad.
When canceling the policy, Obama said they could still apply for asylum at US embassies around the world, like other foreigners.
