Composer Franz Gruber was an organist at a small church in Austria. On Christmas Eve in 1818, Joseph Mohr, a young priest from a nearby church, asked Gruber to write music to his poem called “Silent Night.” In addition to needing a melody for his poem, he also needed musical accompaniment for guitar since the organ at his church was broken. And to make it even more challenging, it all needed to be done in time to be performed that night! Franz Gruber was up for the task, and not only completed the music on time, but the song “Silent Night” went on to become the most popular Christmas carol ever written.
