When we look at the Earth from above, we see a planet that is covered mostly by water. That is why we also call it the blue planet. On this vast blue surface, there are also bodies of land that do not have any connection with the mainland called islands.
They can form due to different reasons such as volcanic eruptions or continent shifts over a hot spot. Apart from naturally occurring ones, there are also those built by humans and they are called artificial islands. Before going into more detail about the dangers of artificial islands, let us start with answering the basic question: “How are artificial islands made?”
Building artificial islands becomes possible with reclamation which is the process of penetrating the water surface by depositing soil, sand, and other construction materials.
Dating back to ancient Egypt, these islands have been around for a long time, and there can be different reasons for their construction.
For example, the Palm Islands were constructed for touristic purposes while THUMS islands were built to facilitate oil drilling in the area.
However, although these islands are quite helpful to humans in various ways, they can pose great threads for marine life. Lack of proper planning before the construction of such islands can cause irreversible damage to the whole ecosystem.
