I often speak about leading by example, but what does lead by example mean to you? In this video, I outline four leadership tasks that, when you do them well, show others how to be extraordinary, how to connect and build relationships, and how to make a positive difference.
Remember my mail carrier, Fred, who always goes above and beyond in his work? If you want to lead like Fred, get good at these four FRED leadership tasks:
Find
Recognize
Educate
Demonstrate
Find Fred-like people to hire and look for the best qualities in your existing team members. You can teach skills, but you can’t teach heart. When you notice employees exhibiting Fred-like behavior, encourage that caring behavior within your whole team.
Recognize and reward your team members. Motivate employees, but not with a carrot-and-stick approach. Make them want to do well because they know you value exceptional performance and service.
Educate your employees. Coach your team toward your desired outcome, because expectation without education ends in frustration. What does lead by example mean? It means showing, not demanding; it’s about inspiring others rather than dictating what they should do.
Demonstrate with your own behavior what you want from your team. When you show Fred-like characteristics, your team members in turn treat customers as Fred would.
What does lead by example mean? It means more than just performing your leadership tasks alongside your team. The only way to grow your business is to grow yourself and grow your team. Your responsibility as a leader is to find ways every day to develop yourself and your people, demonstrate ideal attitudes and actions, and continuously improve upon your successes.
