Welcome back to our channel, today we answer; cocoa vs cacao, what is the difference, what are the benefits, and stay to the end to learn who makes dark chocolate with the highest health benefits.
All forms of Chocolate are derived from the Theobroma cacao tree, native to South America.
The trees produce seed pods containing seeds that resemble coffee beans, called cacao beans.
Cacao beans can be eaten raw, but they are very bitter. Cacao is the healthiest in this raw form.
Chocolate and the actual studies regarding the health benefits are vastly misleading. The scientists study the cacao beans, not the processed form of products that are titled “Chocolate”.
The typical store sells a diluted or processed form of cacao beans such as candy bars.
Raw or minimally processed cacao beans are considered “superfoods” with a list of amazing health benefits such as:
Antioxidant effects
Cognitive performance enhancement
Regulating insulin levels
Heart protection
Lowers blood pressure
Cacao beans are also rich in nutrients such as magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium, zinc, copper, and manganese. Fundamental nutrients for healthy blood pressure are potassium and magnesium.
Processing the cacao beans through the use of heating them at high temperatures, actually changes the structure of the bean at the molecular level, but is the process for making cocoa powder. The heat processing degrades the nutrient content of the beans. The nutrient value percentages are lower.
The common problem with chocolate is that manufacturers typically add dairy in combination with cacao in some form. Dairy limits the body’s ability to absorb phytonutrients, which makes this a less healthy choice.
Dark chocolate is considered healthier as it has 70% or more cacao. Most chocolate manufacturers tend to add powdered milk to their products to bring down costs and add sweetness, which is not ideal due to the blocking of nutrients.
There are manufacturers that do not add dairy, so checking the label is important.
Here are some chocolate manufacturers that do not add dairy to every product (be sure to check labels for ingredients):
Green & Black
Lindt dark chocolate
Hershey’s
Hu - Get Back to Human
Cocomel’s Chocolate Covered Gifts
Wood Nook Fudge
The other option is to make your own chocolate with dairy alternatives such as coconut oil, honey or other sweeteners instead of dairy and sugar.
