In the early 1990s, Sudan became the unlikely backdrop for a turning point in modern history. It was here that Osama bin Laden, one of the world’s most notorious figures, found refuge.
From 1991 to 1996, under the Islamist-leaning rule of Omar al-Bashir, Sudan provided a safe haven for bin Laden and his emerging terrorist network, Al-Qaeda.
During his years in Sudan, bin Laden began to transform Al-Qaeda from a loosely organized group of fighters into a powerful organization.
In this episode of African Biographics, we cover the largely untold story of when Sudan became a safe haven for Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda.
