The Ultimate Audi A7 Sportback Experience
When others see you driving around in a pink extended Hummer, they could think that you're celebrating a hen party. If you're seen behind the wheel of a luxury limousine, people may assume that you're a cab driver headed to the airport and that you're picking up the CEO of a multinational corporation. Which is maybe one of the most compelling reasons to think outside the box when it comes to luxury and choose instead for a four- or five-door coupé like the Audi A7.
The luxurious inside of the Audi A7 is designed to appear and feel very much like the cabin of the bigger and more costly Audi A8. Additionally, much like the engines found in the A8, those found in the A7 make use of 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. This enables emission-free coasting, energy recovery while braking, more responsive performance, and an improved stop-start system. There is also a plug-in hybrid variant, which can be charged at home and provides up to 25 miles of driving range on pure electric power alone.
The 2.0-liter 40 TDI diesel engine with 201 horsepower is the entry-level diesel option. Although it is the slowest of all the engines, it will nevertheless let you to cruise at speeds that are at or above that of the freeway with considerable ease. It is the only engine that can be purchased that does not come equipped with quattro four-wheel drive as a standard feature, and the 0-62 mph sprint can be completed in 8.3 seconds with the front-wheel drive version (if you option the quattro system this drops to 7.0sec).
You'll need one of the two 3.0-liter V6 engines if you want a diesel with more serious kick than the other. Although we have not yet put the 228-horsepower 45 TDI through its paces, the 282-horsepower 50 TDI is brisk. It is grunty from low rpm and has enough remaining in the mid-range to drive you along fast without breaking a sweat. It also has plenty left in the upper ranges. In point of fact, in terms of acceleration, it will almost equal whatever that a BMW 630d is capable of doing, despite the fact that the more powerful Mercedes CLS 400d is substantially quicker.
Along the same lines, there is also a gasoline V6 available, designated as the 335 horsepower 3.0 liter 55 TFSI. It is faster than the 50 TDI (0-62 mph in 5.3 seconds according to the manufacturer), but you have to crank the engine more vigorously to get the most out of it. According to our analysis, the gasoline 2.0-liter engine with 242 horsepower is the one that offers the optimal compromise between price and performance (45 TFSI). Again, in order to get the most out of it, you need to rev it hard. When you do so, it will technically reach 62 miles per hour in 6.2 seconds, but there is enough power in the low to mid-range for it to offer a rather comfortable pace.
When starting off in the plug-in hybrid model 55 TFSIe, there is not the same hesitation that is seen in other models; an electric motor provides quick acceleration, and a gasoline engine of 2.0 liters joins in to provide maximum acceleration. It takes this model 5.6 seconds to get from 0 to 62 miles per hour, which is very quick; however, the fact that it can go up to 25 miles on battery power alone (though 20 is more practical) is what makes it so enticing.
Various suspension options are available. The Sport trim models feature ordinary suspension, whilst the S line and Black Edition variants have strengthened and lowered suspension to assist decrease body roll in corners. This accomplishes its goal rather effectively, but at the sacrifice of a harsh ride. This doesn't really go well with the laid-back nature of the A7; therefore, you should really consider getting the Sport trim only for this reason.
