One of the most challenging types of cross examination is that of an opposing medical expert in a medical malpractice case.

Why?

It's because the medical expert has specialized knowledge.
It's because the expert know more than the attorneys.
The expert knows more than the jurors.

However, cross examination is often a search for the truth.
You probe to test the expert's credibility.
You probe to identify the expert's weakness.

The biggest mistake a young attorney can make when cross examining an opposing medical expert a trial is to ask open-ended questions such as "Why, who, what, where, when & how."

Allowing a medical expert to do that can be the kiss of death for your entire cross examination and possibly your entire case.
