Catface trees and fragments of herty cups are a common discovery in longleaf pine ecosystems. They're relics from the turpentine industry--an industry that helped drive the migration of Americans to the south.
"There’s more to the Fire Forest than meets the eye. A huge industry meshed with longleaf pine when people realized a utility of the trees that had nothing to do with cutting them down. The use of these trees to create turpentine helped prosper the growth of settlements in the South, effects of which can still be felt, and seen, today."

Special thanks to Helen Roth and Tom Roth for allowing us to film their trees (and for helping to restore the Fire Forest).
