The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches are ancient China’s systems of keeping time. Thus, in BaZi (八字) are eight characters made up of 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches based on our Year, Month, Date and Time of birth.
Based on the five elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, there are 10 Heavenly Stems made of Yin and Yang. Below are the 10 heavenly stems (天干) in BaZi.
Jia (Yang Wood) 甲木(陽木) and Yi (Yin Wood) 乙木 (陰木)
Bing (Yang Fire) 丙 (陽火)and Ding (Yin Fire) 丁(陰火)
Wu (Yang Earth) 戊 (陽土)and Ji (Yin Earth) 己(陰土)
Geng (Yang Metal) 庚(陽金)and Xin (Yin Metal) 辛(陰金)
Ren (Yang Water) 壬(陽水)and Gui (Yin Water) 癸(陰水)
The heavenly stems can be referred to external factors that define who we are and what we project externally for others to see. We also can use the heavenly stems to analyse a person’s characteristics, strengths, relationships with others, disposition and appearance.
The Twelve Earthly Branches are comprised of: 子 (zǐ), 丑 (chǒu), 寅 (yín), 卯 (mǎo), 辰 (chén), 巳 (sì), 午 (wǔ), 未 (wèi), 申 (shēn), 酉 (yǒu), 戌 (xū), 亥 (hài).

What is BaZi (八字)?
Just like Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數), BaZi (八字) is another form of ancient Chinese destiny analysis based on a person's birth year, month, day and hour. BaZi (八字) simply means 'eight characters' in Chinese and these eight characters can be used to decode all aspects of one's life including our character, wealth, power, relationship with others, love, illnesses, fortunes and misfortunes. It is believed that when a person is born in this world, he or she will be influenced by celestial bodies, especially the big planets in our solar system. The formation of these big planets will create a certain energy pattern. These energy patterns are represented in five elements — wood (木), fire (火), earth (土), metal (金), and water (水) — that are believed to be the fundamental elements of everything in the universe between which interactions occur.

What is Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數)?
Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數) or commonly known as 'Purple Star Astrology' or 'Imperial Astrology' is a form of Destiny study (命學/命理学) in ancient Chinese culture. It is one of the five arts (五术/五術) of Chinese metaphysics, which involves a complex scientific calculations based on one's natal chart. In order to read one's destiny using Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數), all you required is your date of birth, time of birth and location of birth. There are two prominent lineages of Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數), namely, the San He or Triangle Harmony Formation style (三合) or the Si Hua or Four Enhancer Flying Stars method (四化飞星).
