Dear Andy
I was hoping my campaign of persuading the Newbury Racecourse Authority, to remove their highway obstructions, had been successful, but it might only be an illusion.
Their iniquitous barriers (previously rising bollards) in Racecourse Road have been raised, for a week now, ever since storm Eunice upended their sentry box (see photo), but that might be due to an electrical supply problem, rather than any civility on their part.
Newbury Racecourse claims it is a private road, but Greenham Parish Council believe it to be a public highway, it’s certainly on a bus route (No: 9). If it is a private road there is no need for insurance, road tax or MOT, nor adherence to any Highway Codes. If it’s not, TVP should prosecute, for highway obstruction.
These barriers were installed, because the residents of the new exotic flats objected to those plebeian folks who live on the hill south of Newbury, were using the road as a ‘rat-run’, shortest route to Thatcham and all points east. They demanded a ‘gate’, forcing those citizens on a route through Newbury (A339 and the Robinhood Roundabout gyratory system), which of course, introduces unnecessary air pollution into the Town.
What will it take to educate this arrogant attitude of Newbury Racecourse and its residents, to be nice to the people of Newbury, rather than treating them with contempt?
Meanwhile, I suggest the residents of Newbury, thunder down Racecourse Road (there is no speed limit) and rattle their windows, before Newbury Racecourse remove their privileges.
Regards
Stan Green
