(15 Aug 2014) Hundreds of farmers from all over Paraguay protested on Friday for a third day in the capital Asuncion against the government of President Horacio Cartes.
The farmers were joined by leftist activists and politicians for a rally near the Congress building.
Local media reported that protesters were especially upset about the Public Private Partnership law that the government says will attract private investment to build public infrastructure such as roads and electricity networks.
Opponents call it "disguised privatisation."
Paraguay's Congress passed the law on October 2013 and it is supported by Cartes.
Cartes delivered a message through government media stressing there's "still much to be done," but that the country has chosen the "right path."
Cartes, whose term runs until August 2018, built a fortune with two dozen companies that dominate industries in Paraguay, from banking to tobacco.
He's been a target of US criminal investigations and has been accused of drug trafficking and money laundering.
