NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode we find ourselves starting from a new canal having been on the Grand Union Canal for so long! We set off from picturesque Braunston after chatting to a subscriber who was kind enough to buy us a gift - thanks Stephen! It's a beautiful open stretch of the Oxford canal with some lovely skies and farm scenery. After passing Barby and it’s Marina we close in on Hillmorton Locks which are being time managed for the day by the CRT. At least it gives us the chance to look at a wonderful vintage boat that also happens to be for sale, a bargain at £58,000 surely???. Sue gets excited at the Top Lock when she operates the lock gear and finds it soooooooooooo much easier and nicer to use than the heavier and larger double equivalents on the Grand Union. After tackling Hillmorton Locks we take the newer cut of the Oxford Canal through Rugby but there are constant reminders that the canal in the early 1800's used to take a more meandering route with ornate cast bridges left as a reminder of the past. We take the benefit of the newer cut to make some progress before getting to the swingbridge at the Stretton Arm of the Oxford. We hadn't realised just what a historic little spot it was though.
