EX SITU CONSERVATION OF THREATENED PLANTS
EX SITU CONSERVATION OF THREATENED PLANTS
FRIM undertakes efforts to safeguard plant species from the threat of extinction through in situ conservation, by establishing conservation areas within the original habitat; ex situ conservation involving the conservation of a small portion of germplasm in areas like botanical gardens and arboreta.
One of the FRIM’s efforts is the establishment of ex-situ germplasm of rare and threatened plants. The germplasm materials such as seeds are collected during expeditions and botanical inventories. The seeds are then sown in the nurseries of the Kepong Botanic Gardens and transplanted.
FRIM is one of the country's repositories of living plants and was declared as a 'Natural Heritage Site' in 2009 for its efforts in conserving and protecting the forest environment.
